Sokikom: Engaged Learning at Its Best

Trying to get students engaged in classroom instruction can be a significant challenge— students may not be interested in a topic, they may be distracted, or they may just not get it. The lack of focus in a classroom, or while studying, can be a significant obstacle to students' academic progress. Educators across the globe know that any tool or strategy that can boost student engagement has the potential to significantly increase student achievement.

Founded by Snehal Patel, CEO, Sokikom is revolutionizing the way students learn math, while increasing both student engagement and academic performance. A former teacher himself, Patel noticed that his elementary students were struggling to learn math because they found the concepts difficult, and didn’t believe they were even capable of learning them. As a result, students would often get frustrated and give up. At the same time, he also noticed that his students did not give up when they faced challenging problems in games— especially when the games were team-based. Taking a cue out of this, Patel strove to create a company that taught math through team-based and individual games, and Sokikom is the triumphant result. "Today, Sokikom is the only U.S Department of Education funded bilingual supplemental math program where elementary students help each other learn in a team based game," says Patel.

Speaking on the formula that Sokikom uses, Patel says, “We sort of cracked the code of making team based learning work in the classroom, and doing it in a way that's incredibly engaging for students, and which ultimately leads to higher academic results.” Due to its strategy of using games to keep students focused, “engagement (in Sokikom classrooms) is at a level beyond what many classrooms have ever experienced, especially in mathematics.” he adds.

This is a remarkable occurrence, and it benefits the students as well as the teachers.

The students benefit through their increased academic progression, and the teachers benefit by being able to reach the students in a profound way.

Arizona State University along with JBS International conducted the first third party study of any math program since the new Smarter Balanced digital assessment to see the impact on academic performance and intrinsic motivation. The study was conducted at the Rio School District in Southern California which has a diverse population of students including many English learners and students from lower income communities. Over the course of a year, the study found that students using Sokikom reliably significantly outperformed all other students in the new Smarter Balanced California math test, regardless of grade, school, or teacher—and the single most important variable was Sokikom use. Perhaps just as important, the study also found that students using Sokikom reliably were more than twice as likely to radically improve their beliefs about math.

Another area that makes Sokikom different is its Professional Learning. "We have a Teacher Happiness Department that provides training to teachers in their classrooms with their own students. Our team of former teachers visit individual classrooms virtually or in-person to do modeling and coaching with teachers," says Patel. While most technology companies focus on product training, Sokikom goes beyond that by helping teachers improve their mathematics teaching practice.

The strides that Sokikom is making toward improving the process for teaching elementary school students math has been nothing short of remarkable.
